Here's to an Organized Life

My sister, Lynn, was just in town visiting and while she was here, we did a lot of Seattle-ish things (more about her visit in another post). She also helped me to reorganize my kitchen. Can you use the word "reorganize" when it was never organized to begin with? I have been dreaming about owning a dishwasher and since my good friend is going to give me one in a month or two (thank you!!), Lynn and I decided to figure out how to make it fit. We went to Storables (one of my favorite stores) and found cheap stackable baskets and turned my JUNK cupboard into 10 organized baskets. While this may not look impressive to you, it's a major improvement.

We also eliminated clutter on two of my small counters. Since my major kitchen complaint is that I have no counter space, this is HUGE! I'll gain one more when I can get rid of my dish drying rack. (Again, may not look impressive unless you've EVER been in my kitchen. I actually DO have counters! :)

We fit all of my canned goods in a new location and made room for the dishwasher. I even cleaned the top of my fridge (that was frightening). I have a new incentive for keeping my kitchen clean because now it actually looks clean when it is clean! It doesn't just look like organized chaos.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, LYNN!! It's so much more fun to do projects like this with company and an extra pair of hands.
I have always thought that if I could find a place for everything, it would be relatively easy to maintain a clean, organized life. But I can't seem to find a place for everything. (Some days I try harder than others). I keep reminding myself that we live in a small apartment and own stuff for five people, including a baby. But I still long to declutter. Does anyone have any organization tips? Any good decluttering ideas? Ways to stick to a cleaning schedule? How to not let clutter bother you?

Since I am asking for organization tips, here are a few of my own:

1. Another one of my amazing friends gave me a copy of her mother-in-law's organization tool - it's a Word document that you can print out and take to Kinkos to have it spiral bound. It has a calendar for each week on it that includes room for "chores" and "dinner." It also has room for grocery lists, to do lists, errands, and practically anything you want to put on it. It has helped me so much during the last two weeks to keep track of everything I need to do.

2. We hung a clear shoe pocket organizer on the back of our bathroom door to hold all of our bathroom odds and ends. Works great for hairbows and Band-aids, etc. All of those little items that need a home.

3. I can't say enough good things about my laundry hamper. It saves a lot of time and it looks cute:

  1. Congrats on getting your kitchen organized a little. I always feel like I have finished a cleaning check when I finally clean out a drawer or get my counters cleaned off. I tried following the "flylady" advice off of the internet for a few months but the best tip I got from her was to take 5 minutes in the morning and 5 at night to pick up all your clutter spots and make sure to get your dishes done before you go to bed at night. Gets the day started off right. Do I do it everyday? No! I'm a mom :) But I try to when I want to get organized.

  2. I am so impressed that you were able to organize so much. Congrats! I feel like it is a never ending battle at my house. I think I have gotten to the point where it looks ok unless you open a cupboard and then watch out! I wish there was magical secret to accomplish this. If you find one, let us know!

  3. Julie,
I also long for organization and order in my home also keep reminding myself it is 1(2 when Nigel is home) against 4. I do have the kids do chores but even getting them to do their chores is a chore and I spend just as much time working with them to get it done. I hope things will change as the kids get older...sigh...we will see. I love your tips and can't wait to see what others add.
My great brain wave...I have a small folding laundry basket that I can give each of the kids in the evening. They then can walk around the house and look for things they have left out and need to put away. They add them to the basket and then I help them put things away and organize their stuff. It is still a bit of work but allows the kids to take care of their things and be responsible.

  5. Your kitchen looks great. Can't wait to see it...

Also, is that what your laundry hamper looks like? Does it have an ironing board on top? Whether it does or not, I like the one in the picture. Wish mine were like that.

Let me think about the tips and get back to you.....

  6. Happy organizing, and happy anniversary! I believe I was on my honeymoon when you were getting married?? I remember being envious that you were getting to do that fun day and our was already over. (Is that weird?) I am a neat freak, so I appreciate what you have accomplished. If something is not espeically useful or beautiful to me, it doesn't belong in my house. I hate knick knacks and "stuff." When a visiting teacher gives me a sweet little piece of junk, I record it in my journal, remembering how sweet is was and how it made me feel, and then I toss it. I am a thrower awayer. I am sounding heartless, so I will end my epistle. But I'm so on board with organizing!

  9. Ok, so you love your laundry hamper and I do too! Where did you buy it..I want one!!! Good job on getting organized too! Last week I did a major overhaul on our closet and it felt SOOO good once it was all done! The major thing I do is just do a little maintenance every day of the week, and then on the weekends get it all back into pristine order. That's the way we keep on top of things here! Oh, and also just learn to THROW OUT EVERYTHING you don't use often. It feels really good to purge!

  10. Aren't sisters wonderful? Congrats on getting more organized. I have 2 mantras I live by, when in doubt go with out (it keeps you from getting to much junk and can help keep you on a budget) and "if you haven't used it in a year, get rid of it" odss are you really don't need it if you haven't used it. Happy Organizing!!

  11. Funny. The same day I read your blog I read a cousin's who also wrote about organization ideas. Here's her link:
