Jacob had surgery today to remove the rods (aka "elastic nails") from his previously broken arm. He was extremely brave - so much so that the nurse commented he was braver than me. True. It's always nerve-wracking knowing your child is being sedated and having to wait for them to come out of surgery. My heart goes out to so many of you that have chronically ill children and have to do this over and over.
Jacob's coping mechanism before surgery was to be giddy and hyper. He didn't want to try to go to the bathroom, so his awesome nurse Sarah offered to wheel him there in a wheelchair. He was so excited!
After surgery, with his BYU blue blanket that the hospital provided. Appropriate for the rivalry game this weekend.
Not so sure about everything.
When Jacob initially broke his arm in May, he would constantly cradle the fingers of his broken arm with his good hand. He did that today as well. I thought it was sweet.
Jacob had a harder time coming out of anesthesia this time and kept throwing up (enter the awesome husband Rob who held the barf bag so his pregnant wife could be spared). They gave him this tube that blows air on his face to help.
Back in normal clothes (and still cradling that hand).
The BEST part -- the wheelchair ride!!
Rob wanted to keep the rods from his arm, so we brought home a souvenir. We didn't realize until today that they were actually inside the bone. They initially drilled them in place. I was glad I didn't know that until now. Ew!
One very cool fact -- the anesthesiologist was my childhood friend's dad, Dr. Johnson! Small world.
We are back at home and Jacob is feeling great (and enjoying being spoiled).
