Ideas for my Cruiser

Jacob's starting to stand!! He's so proud of himself. He even climbed up our first stair yesterday. He has no concept of falling, though. Here are a few pictures of him standing (while holding objects, of course). The first time he did it was with the Lego bin - I have no idea how it didn't tip over! Isn't he cute? :)

I want to get Jacob some sort of toy he can push while learning to walk (that doesn't tip over too easily). Or maybe a toy he can sit and ride on. His birthday isn't until April, but I figure I might as well watch for sales now. Does anyone have any recommendations? Here are some examples:

  1. The kind that ride are hard for them to stand up behind and you have to be careful with those. My recommendation is to have him try them out before you buy one because some of the wheels on the newer toys have a tendency to be too slick. The toys we bought ended up being faster than my kids. 2. We have two different toys like that and neither of them were actually that popular with my kids when they were cruising. We have one of those old-school Fisher Price pushing things (got it at DI when Sophie was a baby) and a ride-on tractor with the handle (also got it at Goodwill). My kids love to push them around (or ride on the tractor)now, but they were difficult to push when they were just learning to stand. They preferred to just creep along the couch or bookcases. I often see stuff like that at Thrift stores, so it might be a good bet for that. If he doesn't like it then you're only out a few bucks...

  3. I have the last picture and loved it. There is video footage on my blog from last March of Alexis using it if you want to see her with it. She really liked it, and now instead of pushing, you can change where the handle is and she pulls it.

  4. I think everyone has already made great recommendations. I have a hippo where you can sit or push but it's too long and hard to turn when you are standing. We don't have that much space in our small house for turning either. Maybe one styled more like the last picture or the green one would have worked better. Once Brooke got her balance she wanted to push the baby stroller anyways because it turned better. Good luck!

  5. I had this same question when James started cruzing. I never ended up getting any. I just let him push the walker that he lived in before he started cruzing. It worked just fine for me.

  6. I didn't have anything for Emilia and Ella but decided that Eli needed a walking toy since he was pushing around the exersaucer, chairs and toys bins. I shouldn't have wasted the money. He really didn't use it other than sitting on it (it wasn't a sitting toy). Then again his pursuits are mainly vertical, not horizontal.

  7. Julie,
Looks like you have lots of great recommendations to look at. I have to admit that I had to laugh when I read Denise's comment...that is the same in our house, must be boys! We always have had a REALLY old push toy that we have picked up from yard sales and the kids have enjoyed it a lot. I don't know how much pushing was actually done with it but our favorite part was the seat that lifted up so the kids could put other toys in it! Either way best of luck and I enjoyed the pictures. The kids are really growing!

  9. The first two pics on the left are actually the same toy--it has a walker and a car position. We have one, and it was okay, but for the most part, this is the toy that seemed the most useful for my kids. It's very similar to the second car down on the right:

There is a girl version (pink & blue) too...

  10. We got the second one to the left (green one) for Julia for christmas. She loved it then. Then didn't show much interest for a couple of weeks. Now, she loves it again and uses it quite a bit. It's not the easiest to stear, but it works just fine. You can come over and have him try it out at my place if you like.
Movie and pizza night seems like a lot of fun!
