Chapter Book Recommendations, Anyone?

I am currently reading "The Little House in the Big Woods" to Erica and Robby. We recently finished "Charlotte's Web" and "Stuart Little." Do you have any read-aloud chapter book recommendations? I would love to hear them!

  1. When I was a kid we loved Roald Dahl. Fantastic Mr. Fox is hilarious! Did you read all the ones in the Little House series? We read them all when I was a kid. My favorite was Farmer Boy. My mom also got a fun cookbook that was The Little House Cookbook. I bet you could find it at the library. I also remember liking The Wind in the Willows and The Secret Garden.

  3. I think that the book Mr. Popper's Penguins is HILARIOUS! I love it and I think you and your kids would too. If you want to borrow it, I own it, so let me know!

  4. We have read Winnie the Pooh, although it is a little different hearing it out loud in comparison to seeing it on paper. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Homer Price, The Ramona series is quite funny, The mouse and the Motorcycle (Beverly Cleary is an easy fun ready), Mr. Popper's Penguins, James and the Giant Peach, the BFG, and you can never go wrong with the older ones like Black Beauty, Pinnochio, secret garden, bambi, heidi, alice in wonderland. There are a few others that we have read but I can't remember the names off the top of my head. I will look for them and then e-mail you. (=

  5. I would also recommend Roald Dahl. One of my friends specifically recommended the Enormous Crocodile by RD. And a funny one, maybe a little old, but fun for the parents too, are the old Choose Your Own Adventure books.

  6. I'll add my recommendation of The Boxcar Children by Warner. This was my favorite for many years. I even have a copy if you want to borrow it.

  7. We just finished Little House in the Big Woods and are moving on to Little House on the Prairie. We also like Boxcar children. We have read some Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume. Caitlin also likes Louis Sachar. We also just got Mary Poppins (I didn't even know this was a book). I'll let you know if we like it. We love the movie.

  8. We read Felicity the books from the Disney Fairies series and she has loved all that we have read to her. The first one we read was Raynie and she loved it so much we bought a second. Anyway, good luck! It sounds like you have a lot of fun choices!

  9. "James and the Giant Peach" by Roald Dahl is a great read aloud. It is so imaginative and it can really get the kids' imaginations going.

  10. I also want to recommend Black Beauty. I read that book about 100 times when I was a kid. I LOVED horses and that was my favorite. Also, all of the books from the Black Stallion series are WONDERFUL, but maybe wait a few years for those!

  11. you don't know me. i clicked your link from jennifer larson's blog. but i had to suggest The Box Car Children. there a lot of books in the series. my sister is reading them with her girls (5&3). and my daughter (4) likes them too. each book is not very long, but if your children like the characters and such then there are more to choose from so you can keep going with them, and read more stories about the same people! I think that is a plus!

  12. I enjoyed The Indian in the Cupboard series "when I was little." There was another book by Lynne Reid Banks called The Fairy Rebel that I remember reading. Oooh, also Madeleine L'Engle is great, although A Wrinkle in Time might be too old for your kids.

  13. Hi Julie,

Loved reading the updates on your blog. I have to recommend the book "Little Men" by Louisa May Alcott. I am reading it right now and I was just wishing that Jane was old enough for read aloud chapter books!

    Take care!

    Emily
