The Robby Monster

I've recently posted quite a bit, so scroll down if you haven't seen me brag about my family for a while...

Since Robby was a baby, some of his best friends have been a bunch of girls: Erica, Emilia, and Ella. As soon as he was walking (which took a painfully long 17 months), the girls deemed him "The Robby Monster." He would "chase" after them growling with his hands made into claws. I'm going somewhere with this...keep reading.

Erica and Emilia went to Meadowbrook preschool in 2005-06 around this same time. We had many fun "Robby Monster" moments in the gym with all three girls running screaming from this laughing, growling little boy, who was half as fast as them. This week it was Robby's turn to start preschool at Meadowbrook. He is no longer known as the monster...for which I am grateful, since now he really can chase the girls...but being back at Meadowbrook with a preschooler brought back so many fun memories. Especially since he has some of his best girl friends in his class - Ella and Bryn.

Robby told me about his first day after a lot of "nothing"s and "I don't know"s. This is what I was told: he ate pretzels and juice boxes for a snack, the teachers ate apples, he read books, sang "Hola Amigos" (a song that the teacher made up, but Robby learned from Erica years ago), rode bikes in the gym, and made a handprint with paint.

If you know our son, you know him as a major bookworm. It's a great trait, I'm not complaining. When we arrived to preschool and the classroom looked amazing. There were paints, markers, blocks, Legos, dress-up clothes, a play kitchen, etc. There was also a book corner. When I left the classroom, Robby was in the corner all by himself with a stack of books...reading. I'm all for a good book (check out "The Magic of Ordinary Days" for my latest recommendation) and I love his enthusiasm for reading. But I am not paying for him to read all day like he does at home!! The next day we went to playgroup at our community center and Robby grabbed a bunch of books, sat by me on the couch, and didn't touch one toy. At least he's easy to clean up after. :)

One funny story. Erica has been wanting to eat school lunch, so I have been asking her about four times a day what her lunch code is (6767) to make sure she has it memorized. When Robby was putting on his backpack, he said "Now I'm as big as a mom and a dad. My code is 6767 or maybe 7878." It was adorable!

Robby and his friend, Bryn - thanks for the photo, Denise!

p.s. I guess I did the lime green shirt thing again...(see Erica's Kindergarten post below)

  1. How cute!! I still have nightmares about forgetting my lunch code. Weird. Are you "Jules"?

  2. Sounds like fun! So he already has the little girl friends, huh? Owen has one of those and she's not very shy--calls the house multiple times a night (during dinner too), even after being told not to. Yesterday it happened again, until I answered the phone (We were on our way out the door to baseball practice). Then, it magically stopped. :)
