All summer, especially since being pregnant, I have had the feeling I should be keeping a journal. There are so many things about my kids' little childhood that I'm already forgetting. I also thought it would be a way to focus on the positive so that when life becomes difficult, I can read about the good things that have happened. I haven't written in a journal for quite a few years. I wrote off and on during our time in Seattle and am so grateful to have those memories. I have been keeping up this blog consistently since January, which has been a great way to journal the happenings of our family...but also served as a good excuse for not writing in a journal.
As I contemplated what I wanted to write (and later read) in this journal I'm beginning, the thought came to me that I should write down my blessings and the things that make me happy. While I was thinking about this, I read this article from one of the apostles of my church. It talks about keeping a book of remembrance. I LOVE this idea. Here is a quote from this talk: ""President Spencer W. Kimball described that process of inspired writing: “Those who keep a book of remembrance are more likely to keep the Lord in remembrance in their daily lives. Journals are a way of counting our blessings and of leaving an inventory of these blessings for our posterity.”"
Here are the types of things I want to record in my journal:
- tender mercies/small miracles that happen
- things I am grateful for
- things that make me happy
Love this idea. I have a 5 year journal where you write a lline or two a day and then can see what you were thinking for the last 5 years. I was really good this year until I got morning sickness and haven't picked back up because, get this- I don't have a pen on my night stand. Lame. Maybe I will get a pen tonight
ReplyDeleteI've kept journals since 1997. They are helpful in refreshing how I handled certain trials and what was really going through my head at the time. I never really wrote everyday but I usually write when something is bothering me and I need a place to vent or think things through. I also use it to record spiritual thoughts or ideas.
